Your storytelling is saturated with love and feeling, the dynamics of it all, and at the end, you are so right that we live where we are placed, and sometimes seem unable to rise above… The accommodation you describe of yourself is a form of love, most assuredly. Beautiful post. Moving.
I had a dog my brother named Sugarfoot after the old Warner Brothers Western by that name. That was around 1961 or so. Then my brother left. He wanted me to train her. I refused. I wanted her to be herself without an overlord. I'm a feminist so I'm geared that way. She was a small mix of shepherd and collie and she looked like a slightly beefy fox. She was blond and she was so loving. And so loved. When I went away to college, my parents had her put down. I still think of her. When she wagged her tail, her body was nearly at a 90 degree angle in each direction. I still love her. It's so hard to lose a pet.
What patience and kindness of you to deal with the allergy and try with so little success to get her to grow warm towards you. I'm sorry for that difficulty. All good wishes to you with your kindness and patience.

Thank you. ✌️💕
Such a lovely tribute to your sweet, travelin' pup.
I am so sorry for your loss and so touched to read your poignant words, Al. Thinking of you and your family.
